Adelphi Picks Up First Win as a Member DII
Garden City, N.Y. – In their Division II debut, the men's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 grinding win over former East Coast Conference rival, Molloy College. In a physical game that featured eight yellow cards, it was the Brown and Gold that came out on top courtesy of a Chris Joseph goal in the 21st minute.
"I'm very happy for my athletes to grind out a win versus a very organized, talented and well coached team," stated Head Coach Carlo Acquista of his team.
The Panthers controlled the first half on both ends of the field, testing Molloy keeper, Dane Leavy, often as proven by eight shots; six of them on target. Joseph, at the 20:38 mark managed to create distance between him and the defender, fired a shot but was stopped by Leavy. Quickly picking up the loose ball rebound, he managed to slip it by the Lion goalkeeper to find the back of the net and to give the Panthers what would prove to be the game winner.
Defensively the back line comprised of Julian Hohns, John Sabal and Jordan Hibbert along with freshman Sergio Reyes making his collegiate debut between the pipes, had a lock in front of the goal as they allowed just two shots through the first 45 minutes.
Adelphi's midfield did not make it easy for the Lions as they struggled to get their offense going and into Panther territory, being forced to turn the ball over often. Hamza Elotmani and Mathias Coni created the most opportunities for Molloy but they were unable to capitalize.
Joseph led the offensive attack with four shots while transfer Juan Aguiar managed three tries, two of which were on goal. Diego Zuniga and Caelan Hueber each had two attempts.
It was a night of firsts for Reyes as he recorded his first shutout, win and save; stopping six total.
The Panthers are back in action on Saturday, September 7 when they host crosstown rivals, LIU-Post Pioneers at 7pm on Motamed Field. If you can't make the game, tune into www.aupanthers.tv for a live webcast or follow along with the game via live stats or Twitter updates.
