Aztec Men’s Soccer Takes Down Point Loma
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men’s soccer team got back to its familiar winning ways on Tuesday evening, as freshman David Olsen’s goal in the 15th minute propelled the Aztecs to a victory over Point Loma, 1-0, at SDSU Sports Deck.
SDSU improved to 6-3 overall, as it begins Pac-12 play against No. 2 UCLA on Saturday night at the Sports Deck. The Aztecs have now won six-straight matches at home, and are 18-5-2 in non-conference home matches since the start of the 2010 season. The six victories already matches San Diego State’s total from last season with 10 contests left to play.
Olsen recorded his third game-winning goal of the season in the first half, as a Casey Phillips’ corner kick was deflected by a Point Loma player right in Olsen’s direction. The freshman calmly knocked through his team-best sixth goal of the season on a diagonal shot from the right side and 12 yards out to put San Diego State ahead to stay.
Point Loma (0-6-1) had one final chance to tie in the 88th minute, but a shot by Matt Rose off a corner kick trickled harmlessly wide right.
The Aztecs outshot Point Loma, 11-8, and finished with a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Olsen, senior defender Evyn Hewett, freshman forward Donald Benamna and freshman midfielder Ozzie Ramos finished with two shots apiece, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Adam Allmaras tallied two saves for his third shutout of the season.
In addition, SDSU junior midfielder Mark Revell and Hewett each played all 90 minutes of the victory, while freshman Bryce Flores played 51 minutes in his first-career appearance in an Aztec uniform.
San Diego State now turns its attention to Pac-12 play, where four of the remaining five teams on its schedule are ranked in the latest NSCAA Coaches Poll, including two in the top-five. In addition, Oregon State is currently receiving votes in the NSCAA poll, and is ranked 28th by College Soccer News.
Man of the Match: Freshman forward David Olsen (Fircrest, Washington) was named Man of the Match on Tuesday night, after scoring his team-best third game-winning goal of the season in the 1-0 victory over Point Loma. Olsen leads the Aztecs with six goals on the year, and entered the week tied for third in the Pac-12 in goals scored, and ninth in points.
