Bears Win Third-Consecutive Match, Blank Evansville 3-0
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Missouri State men’s soccer team (5-5-2, 3-0-0 Missouri Valley Conference) extended its winning streak to three games with a 3-0 shutout of Evansville (5-6-0, 0-3-0 MVC) on the road. Finding their rhythm at the right time, the Bears are unbeaten in league play and hold a one-match lead over Drake in the MVC standings.
Only three shots were taken the entire first half as Evansville led with a 2-1 shot advantage heading into the break. Spangenberg notched saves on each of the Purple Aces’ shots, while the Bears couldn’t muster a shot on goal in the first period of play.
Locked in a tight battle, the Bears took just their second shot of the night one minute into the period and made it count. With a two-on-two breakaway, Cole Alexander passed it up to Jared Clark who chipped it in from about 20 yards out. Evansville goalkeeper Eric Teppen had a chance to bring the shot in, but Clark put enough height on the ball to get it over Teppen’s head.
The Bears added some cushioning to their lead with a strike in the 55th minute. Following a cross from Jordan Hoffman, the ball pinballed back and forth in the box. With a handful of white jerseys in on the play, Clark got the final touch and was credited with his second goal on the night.
In the 82nd minute, Missouri State upped its lead to 3-0 as Parker Maher sent a beautiful pass to Cole Alexander who put it into the back of the net for his first career goal.
Spangenberg recorded four saves in 90 minutes and logged his second-straight shutout against an MVC opponent. It was his fourth shutout of the season.
With the victory, Jon Leamy reached the 200-win plateau at Missouri State and improved his overall coaching record to 200-142-38.
Up next, the Bears will take a break from MVC play and return to Plaster Field to host UMKC on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
