Beavers Blow By Mountaineers 6-0
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men’s soccer team got its season off to a strong start Wednesday evening, as the Beavers took down Eastern Oregon by a score of 6-0.
“It was amazing to see the smiles on the guys’ faces as they got to compete again,” said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. “This was a good team performance, and it was nice to get almost all of our guys on the field. You could see that everyone on the team was really happy for each other. As a staff we were really pleased to see all of the guys excited to be back and competing again.”
Sofiane Djeffal and Mouhameth Thiam netted two goals apiece, while Gloire Amanda tallied one goal and three assists. Tyrone Mondi also opened his Oregon State account, recording a goal and an assist in the contest.
Djeffal nearly opened the scoring just minutes into the match, but his shot from 18 yards out drifted just over the bar. Amanda followed that up with a header off the post in the ninth minute.
Djeffal came close to finding the opener again in the 18th minute, banging a free kick off the crossbar from 20 yards out.
Thiam found the net in the 22nd minute, scoring from close range after Amanda set him up from the right side of the box. Djeffal added a second from the penalty spot seven minutes later, slotting the ball past the keeper to double the Beaver advantage.
Thiam scored his second of the match with six minutes left in the first half, converting on a cross from Joe Hafferty to send Oregon State to the break up 3-0.
Djeffal netted his second in the 67th, off a nice build up play that featured assists from Thiam and Amanda. Mondi added the Beavers’ fifth in the 73rd, heading one home from tight range after Armas’ shot was saved. Amanda finished things off by scoring one of his own in the 80th minute.
As a team, Oregon State recorded 37 shots without allowing a single attempt on goal by the Mountaineers.
