Beavers Top Seattle U 2-1
August 20, 2017
SEATTLE, Wash. – Seniors Natalie Higgins and Emma Jones both found the net as the Oregon State women’s soccer team earned a 2-1 road victory over Seattle U Sunday evening.
The Beavers came back from a first-half deficit to net the win. Higgins leveled the score in the 27th minute, less than 60 seconds after the Redhawks had taken the early lead. Jones tacked on the game-winner in the 74th, curling in a free kick from 23 yards out.
Oregon State created the first scoring chance of the match, as redshirt-senior Emmy Rodriguez headed a corner kick just wide of the post. Fellow senior Kayla Latham fired a shot from the top of the box in the 14th minute, but her effort missed the target.
Seattle U opened the scoring in the 26th minute, finding the net on a scramble in the box. Higgins wasted no time, leveling the score just a minute later. Jones set up the goal with a through-ball from the top of the 18. Higgins held off a Redhawk defender to get away the shot from the left side of the box.
Defender Paula Leblic took aim on a free kick with seven minutes left in the half, but her effort dipped just over the crossbar. Neither side was able to create a chance from there, as the teams headed to the break level at one.
Senior goalkeeper Bella Geist made a big save early in the second half to keep the game level.
It looked as though Oregon State had gone ahead when they put the ball in the net in the 53rd minute, but the effort was flagged offside. Jones followed that up by forcing a save from the Redhawk keeper just over a minute later. The forward from Bournemouth proceeded to put the Beavers ahead in the 74th minute, curling in a left-footed free kick for Oregon State’s second goal of the match.
Seattle U made an effort to level the score on a scramble in the box with less than 10 minutes remaining, but the Beavers were able to clear the ball off the line to silence the threat. The Redhawks pressed on from there, but the Oregon State back-line held firm to secure the win.
The Beavers return home next weekend for matchups with Missouri and Kansas.
