Bezecourt Strikes Again In Overtime
New Britain, CT--- Senior midfielder Vincent Bezecourt stole the ball at midfield, made a run, and beat Nick Velleca with a 1:34 left in the first overtime, to lift the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (8-1-3,1-0-1 NEC) to a 1-0 victory over the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils (2-6-2,0-1-0 NEC) on Sunday afternoon.
Red-shirt senior goalkeeper Jack Binks made four saves and recorded his ninth shutout of the season in the victory.
The Terriers dominated the entire contest, oushooting the hosts by a wide, 21-7 margin. It was the second game-winning goal in overtime for Bezecourt, who also delivered against Lafayette in September.
Senior Harry Odell created the first chance for the Terriers in the fifth minute but his chance went wide of the goal.
Bezecourt came back two minutes later with an opportunity but his shot also went wide.
CCSU created their first chance in the 19th minute. James Randall was able to put a header on goal, which was denied by Binks.
Bezecourt came back with another chance in the 42nd minute. He fired a shot on goal which was saved by Velleca.
The Blue Devils responded with a chance in the 45th minute, as Randall rang a shot off the post.
Sophomore Federico Curbelo generated the first chance for SFBK in the second half. His try was denied by Velleca in the 49th minute.
The Terriers threatened to break the tie again in the 57th minute. Once again, Odell's shot was denied by Velleca.
SFBK came back seven minutes later. Bezecourt's shot was initially blocked by the CCSU defense. Bezecourt then gathered the rebound but his try was stopped by Velleca.
CCSU created an opportunity in the 73rd minute. Ben Knight's header was stopped by Binks.
The Terriers came back with a chance in the 77th minute. Paul Galimi's header, off of a Bezecourt corner kick, went wide of the net.
Curbelo almost broke the tie in the 89th and 90th minutes. First his header went wide and then his shot was denied by Velleca, who made nine saves.
Curbelo then created another chance for St. Francis Brooklyn in overtime. He set up a give and go with junior Collyns Laokandi, but the try was stopped by Velleca. Senior John Makaya gathered the rebound and fired it wide.
The Terriers won 46-seconds later on Bezecourt's tally.
St. Francis Brooklyn returns home to Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 5 on Friday to host Saint Francis University, in a re-match of last year's NEC title match. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
