Bezecourt Strikes In O.T. Against Lafayette
Senior Vincent Bezecourt played a pass from John Makaya and lofted a perfectly placed attempt over Lafayette Leopards goalie Brad Seeber 59-seconds into the second overtime, lifting the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers to a 1-0 victory on Wednesday evening at Brooklyn Bridge Park. The Terriers have won three straight straight contests and improved to 3-0-1. Red-shirt senior goalkeeper Jack Binks made three saves and recorded his third shutout of the season. St. Francis Brooklyn has not allowed a goal in 390:58 minutes of play this season.
"I shot it (the game winning goal) and I had a great feeling it was going in," Bezecourt said after his game-winning strike from 20 yards out.
Both offenses were held in check for most of the contest with very few scoring opportunities for either squad. The Terriers and the Leopards each had two shots in the first half with both red-shirt senior Jack Binks and Seeber making a save a piece.
The scoring chances picked up in the second half. The first came from St. Francis Brooklyn's Yussuf Olajide, who fired wide of the net after a nifty pass by juniorFabian Suele.
Lafayette (2-1-1) responded with a chance of their own in the 55th minute. Ryan Egan's corner kick was headed wide of the far post by Joe DeStefano.
The Terriers came back with a chance in the 60th minute. Bezecourt fired a shot wide following a tick-tack-toe passing sequence between sophomore Dominick Falanga and Suele.
The Leopards countered with a golden opportunity six minutes later. Greg Biggiani snuck behind the Terriers' defense and was stopped by Binks at point-blank range.
St. Francis Brooklyn tried to break the scoreless tie in the 79th minute. Falanga's header off of a corner kick from senior Harry Odell was wide of the goal.
Lafayette then created a tremendous chance in the 86th minute. Grant Burg's shot, off of a give and go with Egan, was turned aside by a diving Binks.
The teams failed to generated chances in overtime until Bezecourt found the ball on his foot in the 101st minute and
Binks recorded three saves and recorded his third shutout of the season. St. Francis Brooklyn has not allowed a goal in 390:58 minutes of play this season.
"It wasn't the prettiest of games, but it is a sign of a champion when a team can pull off a victory when their backs are against the wall," Binks commented. "Four clean sheets (shutouts) in a row are amazing. It is what I have been prepping for since my freshman year."
The Terriers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Saint Peters University. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 p.m.
