Billikens, Colonials Play to 1-1 Draw
October 13, 2013
ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis and George Washington played to a 1-1 draw Sunday in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s soccer action at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens (7-3-1, 1-0-1 A-10) got on the board with an Alex Sweetin goal late in the first half, but GW (3-6-2, 0-0-2 A-10) recorded the equalizer late in the second half.
“We weren’t at our best, but we had enough to see the game out,” SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. “I was disappointed with allowing the goal in the waning minutes of regulation. We knew they were throwing everything they had at us at that point. We just weren’t able to manage it. Overall, this was not a performance that we can feel great about. I expect we will be much more energetic and excited next Saturday against Dayton.”
Sweetin recorded his team-leading fourth goal of the season at the 43:16 mark. From the right corner, Kingsley Bryce sent a long service into the box. Filip Pavisic flicked it on to Sweetin at the far post, and he finished from approximately six yards out to send the Billikens into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
That remained the score for much of the second stanza until Bailey Hinners scored the equalizer off a corner kick. Jonny Forrest sent in the service, and Hinners managed to head the ball into the back of the net to send the game into overtime.
Both teams had chances, but neither were able to secure the golden goal. SLU’s best chance came when Adnan Gabeljic broke in, but his shot was saved by GW keeper Luke Farrell. David Graydon had an opportunity on the ensuing rebound, but his shot sailed just high of the crossbar.
SLU goalkeeper Nick Shackelford made three saves.
The Billikens return to action next Saturday when they host Dayton (10-0-2, 0-0-2 A-10) at Hermann Stadium. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
