Blue Hens Runner-Up at Pitt Invitational
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Delaware men’s soccer team claimed a runner-up spot at the University of Pittsburgh/Nike Invitational after a 1-0 shutout loss to host Pittsburgh Sunday afternoon at Pitt’s Petersen Sports Complex.
Delaware fell to 1-4 on the season while Pittsburgh remained undefeated at 3-0-2 to claim the tournament crown.
“Despite the outcome, today was our best day of soccer this year and I am very pleased by that” Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy said. “We enjoyed long stretches of good soccer and feel bad for the squad that we couldn’t capitalize on our chances.”
With outstanding play during the weekend, three Blue Hens, John Dineen, Vincente Mediate, and Prince Nartey were selected to the All-Tournament team.
The lone goal of the game was scored at the 26:10 mark of the first half when Pittsburgh's Nico Wrobel knocked in a rebound from his own penalty kick that was shot off Delaware goalkeeper Jay Lupas from 26-feet away.
The Blue Hens registered nine shots on goal with Roberto Gimenez leading the squad with three. Lupas made five saves in the loss for the Blue Hens.
Pittsburgh’s goalkeeper Lee Johnston tallied nine saves for the Panthers to post the shutout victory. Wrobel led the Panthers with four shots on goal while Nick Tuohy and Nick Wysong collected the other two shots on goal.
“My job now is to make sure that we get back on track and get ourselves up for a difficult game against Navy,” Hennessy remarked. “I honestly feel the best is yet to come with this group.” Delaware will begin its home schedule at Delaware Mini-Stadium this Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. when the Blue Hens host Navy.
