Blugold Soccer Gets Goal in Final Seconds
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Blugolds.com) – While it looked like the UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team would be handed its first loss of the season at Augsburg College (Minn.) tonight, a goal with two seconds remaining helped keep the Blugolds' unbeaten record intact as the teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie.
The Blugolds and Auggies played a majority of the game without a score on the board but at 67:48, Augsburg scored an unassisted goal to take a 1-0 lead.
Then, with two seconds remaining in regulation, a Blugold pass in front of the goal was redirected by an Augsburg player and into the net to put the Blugolds on the scoreboard.
After playing two extra 10-minute periods to try to determine a winner, neither team would find the back of the net again. In the extra periods, Augsburg outshot the Blugolds 10-2, including a 3-0 advantage for shots on goal.
The Auggies led the game with a total of 27 shots while the Blugolds had 16. The shots-on-goal advantage also went to Augsburg, 11-6.
Nina Behrenbrinker (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) played all 110 minutes in-goal and stopped 10 shots.
Eau Claire is now 2-0-1 on the season while Augsburg is now 2-0-3.
Next up, the Blugolds will be at St. Olaf College (Minn.) for a game beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
