Blugolds Drop Matchup with Tommies
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (Blugolds.com) — The UW-Eau Claire women's soccer team played their second home game in as many days, this time welcoming nonconference opponent St. Thomas (Minn.) to Bollinger Field. On a cool, rainy fall day, the Tommies came away with the 2-0 victory.
The turning point came late in the first half for the Tommies (8-6-0). After playing to a scoreless game through the majority of the first half, the Tommies broke through for a goal with just four seconds remaining.
That late goal swung the momentum in favor of St. Thomas. The Blugolds (5-7-3) could not get anything going throughout the second half. The Tommies got an insurance goal in the 58th minute on a corner kick that found its way past Nina Behrenbrinker (Sr.-St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and into the goal.
Behrenbrinker finished with two saves on four shots. She was replaced with 17 minutes to play by Rachel Griffiths (Fr.-Waunakee, Wis./Waunakee) who made the first appearance of her collegiate career.
The teams finished with eight shots each. The Tommies held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and they were able to convert one into a goal.
The Blugolds will be back home on Wednesday to take on UW-Superior at 4 p.m. They will play their final regular season home game next Saturday against UW-River Falls at 1 p.m.
