Boston College men are coming on strong

Boston College men are coming on strong
November 2, 2009

Marquee match: The UCLA women outlasted USC on Friday in a southern California rivalry that lived up to the hype. It was Senior Night for the Bruins, and Lauren Cheney made it indelible with a goal in the 78th minute to guide UCLA to the 2-1 victory.

The Bruins improved to 5-1 in conference play to stay just behind top-ranked Stanford. While the Pac-10 doesn’t have a conference tournament, it is rivalry games such as this one that bring added importance to the back-end of the season.

Streak to consider: The USC women are 0-13 all-time against UCLA in Westwood, CA. Proof, that some matches are won or lost in scheduling.

Soaring Eagles: The Boston College men haven’t just won five of their last six, the Eagles have managed to knock off some ACC giants in the process. The latest to fall, were the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Freshman Kevin Mejia delivered a second-half goal as BC held on for a 1-0 win. The Eagles appear to be peaking at the right time with the ACC Conference playoffs just around the corner.

(Formerly the Beatdown of the Week, now known as ‘Portland
women Beatdown of the Week’): STOP THE PRESSES! Those indestructible Pilots actually had a match on their hands. The West Coast Conference’s second best team, Santa Clara, finally gave Portland the push it’d been lacking - sort of.

Michelle Enyeart scored in the Pilots’ 1-0 victory, a far cry from the recent drubbings that have earned the program its own category in this weekly recap. But consider that in Portland’s 10-game winning streak they’ve outscored opponents 47-2. Wow.

No place like home: With their 2-1 win over Wisconsin on Saturday the Penn State men completed an undefeated season at home where they posted a record of 7-0-2 on the season. It’s the first time the Nittany Lions have completed a year without a defeat at home since 2001.

On the move:
Don’t look now, but the Washington State women have squeezed their way into our top 20 with some great play as of late.

The Cougars have won six of their last seven, and even taken impressive one-goal losses to Portland and Stanford, who defeated Washington State in OT. With one final weekend that will include matches against USC and UCLA we’ll find out pretty quickly whether their recent play is an indicator or a mirage.

Monmouth-ful: The only men's program near the top of our rankings that still needs a name tag, the Hawks set a new record for single-season wins (15) after beating Quinnipiac 2-0 on Sunday. The program's previous mark was 14 wins, established in 2006.

Monmouth will play its regular season finale against St. Mary's. Take this team seriously.

Playoff update: In the Big East women’s championship, the semifinal bracket is all set: Marquette and West Virginia square off Thursday followed by Notre Dame facing St. John's with the winners set to meet in Saturday’s final.
