Bulldogs Fall 3-1 At FDU
TEANECK, N.J. – The Yale men’s soccer team created quite a bit of danger Sunday night at Fairleigh Dickinson. The Bulldogs, though, were a bit unlucky in the final third, and the result was a hard-fought 3-1 loss to the Knights at University Field.
“We actually did some really good things in possession and created some very good chances,” said Kylie Stannard, the 5K Corral Head Coach of the Bulldogs. “However, like I told the guys, the game comes down to the team that executes the best inside the penalty boxes and FDU was better in those areas and that’s why they won the game.”
The Bulldogs, who lost their opener on Friday when Sacred Heart scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime period, had shots ring off the post and crossbar and were denied on a penalty kick by FDU goalkeeper Matthew Weigner.
Freshman Kyle Kenagy scored his second goal of the season for Yale.
The two-goal margin was deceiving as FDU scored with 34 seconds left in the second half to seal the win.
The Knights (1-2) had only a 15-11 edge in shots, and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Ryan Simpson made three saves for the Bulldogs.
“Tonight was about two teams still trying to figure themselves out early in the season. Unfortunately, FDU figured it out better than we did. Our effort and fitness was incredible again and gave us a chance to win this game. Our guys played 106 minutes two nights ago and FDU had six days of rest to prepare for us. It's a tough turnaround after an unjust result on Friday night but that's college soccer and we don't make any excuses.”
Sam Durkot gave FDU a 1-0 lead when he tallied from in close at 4:21.
Dylan Onderdonk-Snow nearly tied it in the ninth minute, but his shot deflected off the post.
The Bulldogs did get the equalizer when Kenagy headed a long pass from Archie Kinnane over Weigner’s head at 24:33.
Kenagy had a chance to give the Bulldogs the lead 10 minutes later, but Weigner lunged to his left to deflect away his penalty kick. FDU regained possession which led to Brett Conrads knocking home the rebound of a Javen Palmer shot at 36:13.
Yale’s best chance to tie in the second half came when Lucas Kirby hit the crossbar at 66:31.
The Bulldogs applied good pressure for much of the rest of the way, but Christian Dietrich’s goal at 89:26 was a back breaker.
After opening the season with a pair of road games, Yale has its home opener next Friday night against UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
“We are going to keep working hard and are looking forward to playing back home at Reese against an incredibly talented UCSB team that is nationally ranked in the top 15,” Stannard said.
