Bulls Battle Memphis to Scoreless Draw
MEMPHIS, OCT. 16, 2015 – After 110 minutes and a hard fought battle, the USF men’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Memphis Friday night. The tie was the first of the season for the Bulls and their first overtime match.
The Bulls are now 9-3-1 on the season and 4-0-1 in conference play. The tie extended USF’s undefeated streak to four games, to tie its longest of the season. USF now has four shutouts in conference play and through five games has outscored opponents 7-1.
Through a scoreless first half, the Bulls outshot the Tigers, 5-4, and held the corner kick advantage, 5-3. Junior goalkeeper Spasoje Stefanovic had to make just one save in the first 45 minutes thanks to a defense that allowed just one shot on goal.
USF outshot Memphis 8-6 in the final 65 minutes of play, with Nazeem Bartman leading the way with five shots on the night. Seven other players recorded at least one shot on the night, with Marcus Epps recording two.
For the match, the Bulls outshot the Tigers 13-10, with a 7-2 shot on goal advantage. Stefanovic made just two saves on the night, while Memphis keeper Jake Leeker recorded seven.
The Bulls return to Corbett Stadium for three straight matches, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 21, against UCF. USF will then host SMU on Saturday, Oct. 24, and Old Dominion on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
The men’s soccer program has been one of the most successful on campus over the years, advancing to seven NCAA tournaments in the last eight seasons. The Bulls return 13 letterwinners and five starters from 2014 on top of bringing in the third-ranked signing class according to College Soccer News. They won the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship in 2013 and head coach George Kiefer has also led the Bulls to two Elite Eight appearances and four conference/division titles in his 13 seasons as the head man.
