Bulls Beat Portland 2-0 for Second Straight
TAMPA, SEPT. 7, 2014 – Two second-half goals led the Bulls to their second straight victory as they took down Portland, 2-0, on a hot afternoon at Corbett Stadium.
Senior forward Kennedy Selorm Adablah tallied his first goal of the season to break a scoreless tie in the 63rd minute. Adablah hammered home the game winner on a rebound after Portland goalkeeper Paul Christensen made a diving save on a free kick from Wesley Charpie.
“We did a lot of work on set pieces and I just tried to get to the far post. Basically we all did our jobs and it was a team goal,” Adablah said.
The Bulls peppered Christensen with shots early and often, outshooting the Pilots 19-7 on the day, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. With the win the Bulls improved to 2-1-0 on the year.
“I think the key is how they’re working for each other and helping each other,” Head Coach George Kiefer said. “You see a forward recover for a right midfielder defensively and they’re starting to get what it takes, which is good.”
Despite holding a 9-1 shot advantage in the first 45 minutes, USF was unable to put one in the back of the net and went into halftime locked in a 0-0 tie.
Portland came out firing in the second half with some early shots, but the Bulls’ defense held strong and continued to play extremely well throughout the match to keep the Pilots off the scoreboard.
“I thought tactically we were very good and I was pleased with the leadership and how good we were defensively,” Kiefer stated.
Junior goalkeeper Spasoje Stefanovic only had to make one save on the way to posting his first-career shutout for USF.
The Bulls sealed the victory with just under a minute to play when Lucas Baldin scored his third goal in two games, beating Christensen low from 10 yards out to make it 2-0. Edwin Moalosi and Terry Delancy both registered assists on the goal.
USF will look to extend its winning streak to three next Friday night when they hit the road to take on Old Dominion. The Bulls next home match is set for Thursday, Sept. 18 against Brown at 7:30 p.m. Purchase tickets HERE.
