Canisius Tops Robert Morris, 3-2
The Canisius College men’s soccer team rallied from an early deficit to earn a 3-2 victory over visiting Robert Morris on Sunday. The Griffs improve to 2-2-1 with the victory, while the Colonials drop to 1-2-2.
“I was unhappy that we gave up such an early goal but we showed a lot of character to play our way back in it and take the lead,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “Overall, I thought we did a good job possessing the ball and we deserved the win today.”
Robert Morris struck first in the contest, scoring just 7:48 into the game when Miro Cabrilo dribbled past a Canisius defender and fired the ball into the net from 20 yards out for the early 1-0 lead.
Canisius did not waste much time to find the equalizer, scoring just 4:02 after the Colonials’ tally. Sophomore Nicoló Baudo stole the ball from a Robert Morris defender and finished from 15 yards out to knot the game at one.
The Griffs took their first lead of the game when junior defender Jon Cary scored off a set piece in the 22nd minute. On a flip throw-in, senior Andrew Incho sent the ball toward the box and Cary knocked it in for the 2-1 advantage.
The Colonials knotted the game shortly before the break when Luca Campos finished off a series of quick passes as the teams headed into the intermission tied at two.
Incho would respond in the second half and scored the game-winning goal for Canisius in the 69th minute of play. Baudo sent a cross toward the senior forward and Incho tapped it in from six yards out for the 3-2 winning score.
Canisius finished the game with a 19-8 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Senior Ryan Arvin recorded four saves for Canisius to earn the win in net, while Joseph Kuta stopped two shots for the Colonials.
The Griffs continue non-conference play next weekend with a road contest at Western Michigan. The match on Friday is set to begin at 4 p.m.
Game Notes: Canisius defeated the Colonials for just the third time in 16 all-time meetings (3-10-3) … The win was also the first for the Griffs over Robert Morris since 2009 … Both Baudo and Incho recorded a career-best three points.
