Canisius Tops St. Bonaventure in Overtime
Senior Will Hudson scored two goals, including a penalty kick in overtime, to lead the Canisius College men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory against rival St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon. The Griffs complete their non-conference season with a 4-3-1 record, while the Bonnies drop to 6-4-0.
“We did a good job in a tough road game against a good St. Bonaventure team,” said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. “I’m very proud of our effort and work rate today. In the end, I thought the win was well deserved.”
After a scoreless first half, St. Bonaventure netted the game’s first goal when Garrett Pasono scored in the 53rd minute. However, the Bonnies’ lead did not last long as Hudson tallied his first of two goals on the day just 40 seconds later. The senior connected from 20 yards with a shot over the goalie to knot the game at one.
The contest remained deadlocked at one until the extra session when the Griffs were awarded a penalty kick. Off a free kick from 35 yards out, freshman defender Thomas Teupen was pulled down in the box and Hudson finished from the spot for the 2-1 victory.
Canisius finished the contest with a 13-10 advantage in shots, while the Bonnies had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior Ryan Arvin recorded four saves to earn the win for the Griffs with Jeremy Figler posting three stops for St. Bonaventure.
The Griffs now turn their attention toward conference play with the team’s MAAC opener against Manhattan on Saturday. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.
Game Notes: The Griffs have defeated the Bonnies in three-straight meetings for the first time since 1975 to 1977 … Canisius has also won two-straight games at St. Bonaventure after going 0-12-4 in its first 16 trips to Olean … Hudson scored multiple goals in a game for the second time in his career … The senior also connected on a game-winning penalty kick for the second-straight contest.
