Caringi and Ho Connect Twice in UMBC's Win
BALTIMORE- UMBC forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Calvert Hall) continued his early season torrid pace, scoring a pair of goals for the fourth consecutive game, and leading the Retrievers to a 3-1 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn in the Hampton Inn BWI Classic at Retriever Soccer Park.
Junior midfielder Stephen Ho (North Potomac, Md./Wootton) assisted on both of Caringi's goals.
UMBC (4-0-0) won its second consecutive weekend tournament and all four victories of the season have come by identical 3-1 margins. Caringi has netted two goals in each of the games and reached the eight-goal plateau in the fewest games in school history.
St. Francis Brooklyn, which had defeated Navy, 2-1, in their opening match of the classic and suffered a 1-0 loss at No. 5 UConn earlier, slipped to 1-2-0 on the campaign.
Caringi is rapidly rising up UMBC’s all-time goal scoring list. He started the year with 24 and now has 32, moving into seventh place on the list.
For the third time in four games, Caringi recorded the game’s first goal and UMBC struck first for the fourth consecutive time. Junior back In the 28th minute, Jordan Becker(Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) served a ball deep toward the far post and classmate, midfielder Stephen Ho headed the ball back toward the deep center of the box. Caringi leaped above his mark and headed in Ho’s pass from five yards out.
The momentum was going UMBC’s way and ramped up further in the 36th minute when Terrier defender Larry Lopez was issued a red card after pulling down Retriever junior Michael DiCesare (Westerville, Ohio) as the midfielder was headed in uncontested towards the goal. UMBC junior midfielder Mamadou Kansaye’s (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) ensuing free kick from 19 yards out hit the underside of the crossbar, but stayed out of the net.
But it was the visiting Terriers that drew first blood while playing shorthanded and tied the game at 1-1 in the 41st minute. On a counter-attack, a Terrier was judged to have been fouled at the right edge of the box and junior junior Kevin Correa converted the penalty kick.
The Terrier goal occurred on their lone shot of the half as UMBC dominated before and after the penalty kick, outshooting the visitors, 8-1. St. Francis was able to withstand the UMBC pressure for over 26 minutes before allowing the go-ahead score. On a UMBC corner kick, junior Geaton Caltabiano (Lothian, Md./Mount St. Joseph) lofted a ball deep into the box, and after a brief scramble on the doorstep of the goal, a Terrier defender kicked the ball into the upper portion of the net for an own goal.
Ho and Caringi teamed up for the insurance marker in the 73rd minute. Ho ran down a ball deep on the right side and Caringi volleyed his cross into the net from eight yards out.
UMBC outshot St. Francis Brooklyn, 15-1 and had eight corners to none for the visitors. UMBC netminder Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) recorded his 31st career victory, but did not make a save in the game. The Terriers’ Jack Binks was credited with five saves for his side.
The Retrievers increased their unbeaten streak to 13 (10-0-3), dating back to last season and are 4-0-0 for the first time since beginning the 2009 campaign at 9-0-0.
UMBC plays its first road contest of the season on Saturday, Sept. 14 when they visit Radford.
