Carson-Newman hands King first defeat
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The King University women's soccer team drops their first game of the year with luck not on their side from the opening whistle. Nicole Dagher came up strong most of the night but it was not enough in the 2-0 loss to Carson-Newman University.
In the first couple minutes of the game, King (4-1) and Carson-Newman (2-3) traded shots before Kendyl Baird ripped a shot off the crossbar in the 12th minute. Carson-Newman took over the offensive attack and in the 19th minute Dagher came up big with a great diving save. A short six minutes later, Dagher laid out again to keep the ball out of the net and keep the scoreboard showing zeros.
The Tornado had another opportunity in the 38th minute when Eydis Eysteinsdottir delivered a shot from inside the box that ricocheted off the post. This attempt brought the game into the half where the score was 0-0.
King did not start strong in the second half as Carson-Newman delivered a goal six minutes in. Casidy Simonis took a drop pass from Sidnee Edwards at the top of the box and shot the ball past Dagher to make the score 1-0. In the 56th minute, Carson Newman added another goal. Maleya Garrison collected a deflection off of the Tornado defense, took two dribbles and delivered the ball into the back of the net which made the score 2-0.
In the 55th minute, the Tornado had a promising chance when Thorpe hit a shot that resulted in a save by the Eagles keeper, Katy Hill. The shots did not stop there for King as Paula Doran tallied two more in the 60th and 62nd minutes. Thorpe and Baird continued to attack the net but nothing would find its way to the back as both their shots went wide.
The Tornado saw the chances of a comeback diminish when the Eagles added another in the 81st minute. Camilla Olsson hit a shot from the top of the box that beat Dagher and put the score at 3-0.
King continued to attack the net to try and put one past Hill but she made another save in the 87th minute on a shot from Miranda Smith. Baird delivered in the 90th but Hill came up with a save yet again.
Carson-Newman outshot King 15-14 and tallied five corner kicks where the Tornado did not take one.
The Tornado are back in action on Saturday when they will host Converse College at 1:00 p.m.
