CC Uses the Wright Touch To Defeat Dallas
Senior forward Daniel Wright struck for a pair of goals, including the game winner in the 70th minute, to lead Colorado College to a 2-1 victory over the University of Dallas on Friday afternoon at Stewart Field.
Wright was crossing the middle of the field when senior forward Matt Fechter slipped a pass through the defense. Wright touched the ball toward the goal and slid the shot around goalkeeper, James Kerin, into the right side of the net.
It proved to be his team-leading third game-winning goal of the season and the sixth of his career. It also marked the second time in 2012 and fifth overall that Fechter set up a deciding tally.
The Tigers took a 1-0 just 12:22 into the game when Wright sent a bending shot from the left edge of the box inside the right post.
It was the second multiple-goal game of Wright’s career and the fifth multiple-assist game for Fechter.
The Crusaders nearly tied the game in the 34th minute when sophomore midfielder Matthew Wide drilled the crossbar on a shot from 15 yards out on the right side. The rebound went directly to freshman midfielder Colton Allen, who launched a shot over the open net from the left.
Sophomore midfielder Juan Hernandez-Reyes knotted the score a little more than 10 minutes into the second half when he knocked in the rebound of his own shot at the right post.
After chasing down a long pass from sophomore forward Mikhail Castillo, Hernandez-Reyes unleashed a high shot that went off the hands of senior goalkeeper Forrest Marowitz. The ball continued toward goal and he got enough of a second touch to get it through a maze of defenders.
It was the first goal CC allowed at home since the season-opening 3-2 overtime victory against the University of Texas at Dallas on Aug. 31.
The tally was a wake-up call for the Tigers, who outshot Dallas 13-5 in the second half to finish with an 18-10 edge. The hosts also had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Marowitz stopped five shots while improving to 4-0-0 in goal.
CC improved to 7-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Tigers also ran their record at Stewart Field to 5-0-0.
Kerin made eight saves for UD, which slipped to 3-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the SCAC.
Colorado College plays host to Elmhurst College in a non-conference game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
