#17 Clemson and #10 Wake Forest Play to 1-1 Tie
WINSTON-SALEM, NC--#17 Clemson and #10 Wake Forest played to a 1-1 overtime tie in an Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer match at Winston-Salem, NC Friday Night.
Clemson is now 8-2-2 overall, 3-2-2 in the ACC. Wake Forest is now 6-2-4 overall, 4-0-3 in league play.
This was the third straight overtime game for the Tigers in the last six days. Clemson and #2 Notre Dame played an overtime game last Saturday night and the Tigers were winners over #6 North Carolina Tuesday night in overtime.
“We played hard, but we were a little sloppy,” said Clemson Head Coach Mike Noonan. “This was our third straight overtime game in less than a week, two on the road. I thought our team showed grit and determination. It wasn’t our best game this season. However, we got the point on the road and that’s what counts.”
Wake Forest scored at the 15:50 mark when Luca Giminez took a shot and it was blocked by a Clemson defender. However Giminez followed up the shot and put the rebound in the netting for his third goal of the season.
Clemson’s T.J. Casner evened the score in the 37th minute with an assist by Thomas McNamara. On a counter attack, Thomas McNamara crossed the ball to Casner who sent a shot into the goal for his first tally of the season.
With 6:10 left in regulation, the Tigers’ Thales Moreno took a shot, but the attempt was saved by Wake Forest’s goalkeeper Andrew Harris. Clemson’s goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell finished the match with six saves.
The Tigers had another scoring opportunity in the first overtime period. Clemson’s Paul Clowes took a shot but it was just high.
The Tigers will play Furman Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Clemson’s Historic Riggs Field.
