Colorado College Can't Keep Up With Trinity

October 6, 2013

Colorado College went toe-to-toe with Trinity University for 45 minutes, but the visitors struck for four goals in the opening 20 minutes of the second half to record a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at Stewart Field.

“I’m proud of the way our guys hung in there for a half,” head coach Horst Richardson said. “Trinity is a top-flite Division III program with plenty of weapons and an international cast that is very well orchestrated.”

Senior forward Yuri Ribeiro put TU on the board in the 19th minute when he scored on a direct kick from 25 yards out.

CC drew even just 3:04 later when senior forward Sean Parham got a head on freshman defender Christian Wulff’s cross from the left edge of the box, putting the ball just inside the near post.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ian Horne made all three of his saves during the first half to keep the score even after 45 minutes.

Johnny Lawson scored proved to be the game-winning goal 3:49 into the second half when he took a feed from Victor Araujo and put a shot into the top left corner.

Araujo put the game out of reach when he scored twice in a span of 3:51, the second goal coming on a penalty kick after Colorado College was called for a foul as both teams fought for position in the box on a free kick from 40 yards out.

“The penalty kind of broke our back,” Richardson said. “I was disappointed in the call because it never would have been made in the middle of the field. There were far too many instances like that throughout the game for my liking.”

Trinity keeper Matt Cardone made a pair of saves before giving way to Chad Margotta for the final 20:50.

TU finished with a 19-10 edge in total shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Colorado College slipped to 6-4-2 overall and 5-2-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

CC, which saw its 17-game home unbeaten streak come to an end on Friday night, lost back-to-back home games for the first time since 2010.

Colorado College returns to Texas this week for rematches with Southwestern on Friday night and Trinity on Sunday afternoon.
