DAYTON DOMINATES RHODE ISLAND IN FINALE, 3-0
KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team finished up the 2013 regular season with an overwhelming 3-0 win at Rhode Island Sunday.
Both teams battled back-and-forth for position at the start of the contest. Rhode Island had more shot attempts, but was unable to finish in the final third of the field. Dayton’s back line held strong and made each Rhody attempt a difficult one.
In the 40th minute, junior Greg Enstone headed home his shot and gave the Flyers the opening goal on the assist by graduate student Eddie Jones. It was Enstone’s team-leading eighth goal of the year while Jones recorded his third assist.
Less than four minutes later, Dayton doubled its lead with a goal by Maik Schoonderwoerd, who drove home a rebounded shot by redshirt freshman Rafael Gamboa. Gamboa picked up his third assist of the season for his effort while the goal was Schoonderwoerd’s third of the year.
Dayton took the 2-0 advantage into the locker rooms at halftime despite being out-shot in the game by URI, 5-4. Goalkeeper Chris Froschauer and the Flyer back line blanked the Rhody offense through the first 45 minutes.
The second half started with the momentum in Dayton’s favor and the Flyers used that to control the tempo.
Enstone extended UD’s lead in the 73rd minute with an unassisted goal to put the Flyers up 3-0. The England native controlled the ball inside the 18-yard box and chipped the shot over the keeper’s outstretched arms for the goal.
For the third straight game, the Flyers scored three goals and that would be all they would need to pick up a 3-0 victory over Rhode Island Sunday.
Dayton recorded its ninth shutout of the season, which ties the 2009 squad for the most since 2003.
Enstone scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season while Schoonderwoerd recorded his third goal. Jones and Gamboa provided the assists. Dayton had 10 shots in the game while the Rhodies had 13.
The Flyers (14-2-2, 4-2-2 A10) will return home to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships starting Thursday, Nov. 14. The brackets will be announced Sunday night.
