DAYTON MEN’S SOCCER WINS A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP

FAIRFAX, Va. – The University of Dayton men’s soccer team defeated VCU on Sunday afternoon, 4-1, winning the 2015 Atlantic 10 Tournament title.

This is the first A-10 Championship since 2009 and the first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2008.

Dayton is now 13-5-3 on the season.

KEY STATS

In the first half, Dayton out-shot VCU 9-4 and put three on target. The Flyers finished the game with 22 shots, 10 on goal, and allowed just nine and three on goal to the Rams.

Senior Kissima Bojang’s goal in the 15th minute was his second in as many games in the A-10 tournament. Junior James Haupt’s assist on the same goal was his sixth of the season, second most for the Flyers.

This is the seventh game for UD this season in which the Flyers scored four or more goals.

Sophomore Oliver Hansen had a save in 31 minutes of action before junior Justin Saliba took over and had a save in 59 minutes of play in goal.

Haupt led the team with five shots while senior Amass Amankona and senior Maik Schoonderwoerd had four shots each.

 

DAYTON GOALS

15th Minute: Senior Kissima Bojang (5th goal of season) drilled a missile from 25-yards out off the layoff pass from junior James Haupt, giving Dayton the initial lead. (Dayton 1, VCU 0)

60th Minute: Senior Alex Amankwaah (2nd goal of season) directed his free kick to the back post and the curling shot bounced past the VCU keeper. (Dayton 2, VCU 0)

72nd Minute: Senior Maik Schoonderwoerd (10th goal of season) placed sophomore Nick Hagenkord’s cross to the left side of goal. (Dayton 3, VCU 1)

79th Minute: Senior Carlos Sendin (4th goal of season) headed home the corner kick from Amankwaah to put Dayton on top by three goals. (Dayton 4, VCU 1)

71st Minute: Junior Dakota Barnathan headed home the cross from Jorge Herranz, cutting the Dayton lead to one. (Dayton 2, VCU 1)
