DAYTON ROLLS TO 3-0 WIN OVER LOYOLA
EVANSTON, Ill. – The University of Dayton women’s soccer team improved to 3-0-0 with a 3-0 win over Loyola Chicago (2-1-0) Friday afternoon at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic.
Freshman Haley Keller notched the game-winning goal and an assist in the victory for the Flyers; her second game winner of the season. Sophomore Juliana Libertin (55th minute) and junior Alexis Garcia (74th minute) also scored.
Freshman Kelsey Smigel had the assist on the game-winner after sending a cross into the box to Keller in the 38th minute to give UD a 1-0 lead at the half.
“The overall play today we had longer stretches when we were really good,” said UD Head Coach Mike Tucker. “It was some beautiful soccer and we created so many opportunities. We scored three but if we were a tad better finishing we could have had six or seven. Their keeper also made some brilliant saves.”
The Flyer defense picked up their first shutout of the 2011 campaign and junior Katherine Boone was credited with the shutout.
“For us getting the shutout is great. We worked all week on it and we knew had to get a lot better,” said Tucker. “There were moments we played great defense. From the run of play the defense did not give up much at all.”
UD used 20 different players in the match and outshot the Ramblers 21-4.
“We had a bunch of people dinged up and we weren’t full strength,” said Tucker. “Haley had a nice day out there. We had a lot of people step up and take on more. Nearly our entire travel roster played today."
Dayton plays the host Northwestern Sunday, Aug. 28 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
