Early goals lead #11 Limestone past King
GAFFNEY, S.C. – Playing on the road against one of the top teams in the country, teams usually need to get off to a good start if they have a chance at pulling the upset, especially when they are on the road. However, the King University men's soccer team got off to a slow start when they traveled to take on #11 Limestone College on Wednesday night as the Saints netted a pair of goals in the first 17 minutes en route to the 3-0 victory.
Limestone (11-1, 7-0 CC) opened the scoring in just the sixth minute as Sam Orritt laced his shot from the top corner of the box into the left side of the goal to give the Saints the start they were looking for. It didn't take the Saints long to strike again as Jorge Mackenna took a pass on the left side of the box and beat the Tornado keeper to the right to put Limestone up 2-0 in the 17th minute.
From there, the Tornado (5-6, 3-2 CC) started to settle in, and got a pair of chances in the 30th minute. Goalkeeper Kari Sveinsson made a save in the 36th minute to keep the score at 2-0 before King had the best scoring opportunity of the first half. Alfred Schwab beat the Limestone keeper, but the Saint defense was there to keep the ball out of the goal as the game went to halftime at 2-0.
The Tornado turned up the offense early in the second half, taking a corner kick, and having a pair of shots blocked in the first 15 minutes. However, just a few minutes later, in the 63rd minute, as Lalaina Randriamanantena scored off a Limestone free kick to make the score 3-0.
