Early Hole Costs Wick in Loss to Ga State
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick surrendered goals 1:49 apart, both inside the first 10 minutes of the match, in a 3-0 Sun Belt Conference loss to Georgia State on Senior Day at Elmore Field. The setback leaves the Hawks’ record at 7-8-1 overall and 2-2 in the league. The Panthers improve to 11-5-1 and 3-0-1 in Sun Belt play.
Hannes Burmeister got the first of his two goals on the day at the 7:30 mark of the opening half. His corner kick took a bounce in the box through traffic and went directly into the far corner of the Hartwick goal for a 1-0 Panther lead. Less than two minutes later, a free kick from Liam Fitzsimmons was punched by ’Wick keeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) but Kyle Clinton was on the doorstep to clean up the rebound as he roofed his shot into the net from two yards away.
Hartwick had its top chance of the half in the 23rd minute when leading scorer Jamie O’Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk HS) burst into the Panther box and got a powerful shot off from a difficult angle. The shot smacked off the crossbar and stayed out keeping the game at 2-0.
Georgia State came close to getting its third goal two minutes into the second half as Nick Hague screamed a shot inches wide of the far post.
Hartwick came close to a goal with 28 minutes remaining in the match when Johnny McBeth’s (Glasgow, Scotland/Upper Iowa University) left-footed service into the box was just out of reach of O’Grady in front of the Panther goal.
Minutes later, Georgia scored its third set piece goal of the day off another corner. Fitzsimmons provided the service and Burmeister was on the near post to head home his seventh goal of the season.
Down 3-0, the Hawks refused to go quietly producing several opportunities. Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) slammed a shot high following a Jonny Carr (Sunderland, England/Monkwearmouth School) service with under 22 minutes remaining. O’Grady had a header inside the box that a charging Yannic Horn got a hand to shortly after.
McBeth’s bullet from 25 yards away required Horn to make a tough reaction save in the 76th minute. Berry, after some individual work in the box, volleyed just wide of the target after a Marco Torino (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford HS) pass in the 83rd.
The two teams finished the night with 13 shots apiece. Both Wilson and Horn made four saves in the contest.
Prior to the match, seniors Berry, Conor Corboy (Aptos, CA/Mississippi College), McBeth, and O’Grady were recognized for their contributions to the Hartwick men’s soccer program.
Hartwick has one game remaining on its regular season schedule. The Hawks, who are currently tied for third in the Sun Belt standings, play at Howard in a league match on Saturday, November 4 beginning at 2 p.m.
