East Carolina Falls at Old Dominion, 2-0
NORFOLK, Va. – The East Carolina women’s soccer team suffered its first Conference USA road loss on the season, a 2-0 setback at Old Dominion on Friday evening.
“We knew they were going to come out with some desperation and play hard and they did,” said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. “Unfortunately, we did not. Tonight was a step backward for us and we need to regroup for Sunday.”
Old Dominion (1-8-1, 1-2-0 C-USA) struck early, producing a goal in the 10th minute on a shot by Jessie Klamut. The goal was the earliest East Carolina (4-6-2, 1-2-0 C-USA) has allowed a score in a match this season.
ECU had its share of chances in the first half however, putting three shots on goal that were all saved or turned aside by ODU goalkeeper Merdith Lenox. The Monarchs led the Pirates, 9-6, in shots in the first half, while also maintaining a 4-2 edge in corner kick opportunities to take their 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Pirates took numerous attempts at netting an equalizer in the second half, but could not do so before the Monarchs tallied their second goal of the game in the 87th minute on an indirect kick by Taylor Smith to seal Old Dominion’s first win of the season.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Saundra Baron made four saves on the night, while freshman Abby Noble recorded a career-high five shots in the contest – two of which were on goal. Freshman Jenna Geist posted two shots in the game with one on goal.
Old Dominion held a 16-12 edge in shots in the game, while both teams took six corner kicks.
East Carolina will look to get back on track Sunday, Oct. 6, when it takes on UAB at 1:30 p.m.
