ETSU grinds out, 1-0, shutout over PC
CLINTON, S.C. (Aug. 31, 2012) – Redshirt freshman Emmanuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn.) scored his first career goal with 4:47 remaining on Friday night against Presbyterian, leading the ETSU men’s soccer team to a, 1-0, win on Edens Field at Martin Stadium.
Having already taken 20 shots in the game, ETSU (2-1-0) was five minutes away from heading to overtime when a foul was called on Presbyterian (1-2-0, 1-0-0 Big South). Redshirt senior Colin Pugh (Dublin, Ireland) sent a free kick into the penalty area, which eventually found the foot of senior Theo Yang (Lilburn, Ga.). Yang got a pass away toward Wilson, who got off a shot from 10 yards out that beat PC keeper Tyler Beadle into the left side of goal.
“I came in late and wasn’t expecting anything crazy to happen,” Wilson said. “It feels great to score for the team. I worked hard when I got into the game and it just came. Theo played a great ball to me and I took a touch and hit it in with my right foot.”
Wilson came on in the 81st minute, and made all the difference on his only shot of the game. For the night, ETSU outshot PC, 21-5, including a, 10-0, advantage in the first half. Wilson’s goal proved to be the Bucs’ last shot of the game.
“We had a lot of possession and created a lot of chances, but just had a difficult time breaking through,” head coach Scott Calabrese said. “PC defended fairly deep and very well. Their goalkeeper was outstanding on the night. Ultimately, we got a goal, that wasn’t necessarily pretty, off a set piece.”
The Bucs applied pressure to PC throughout the first half. ETSU took ten shots and seven corners in the opening period, while holding the Blue Hose without any attempts at goal and just one set piece from the corner. Seven different Bucs took chances, with sophomore Simon Schroettle (Rain, Germany), junior Itode Fubara (Ogbema, Nigeria) and redshirt senior Franck Doumbe (Silver Spring, Md.) leading the way at two shots apiece.
After Presbyterian finally fired its first shot of the game in the second half, ETSU countered and was presented with a great chance for a goal. Fubara got free in the PC box, and sent a cross to ETSU’s leading goal scorer David Geno (Kingsport, Tenn.). The junior was one-on-one with Beadle, and took a shot that the PC keeper saved for one of his eight stops on the night.
The Blue Hose responded with a near goal of their own. Ignacio Monchetti and ETSU keeper Ryan Coulter (Dublin, Ireland) raced to a ball at the top of the box, which Monchetti got to first to take a shot with only Coulter in front. Coulter reacted and made an outstanding save, which rebounded to PC’s Greg White who took another near attempt that Coulter snagged out of the air. The Irish keeper wound up with three saves in all off five shots faced, earning his first shutout of the season.
The back-to-back shots proved to be PC’s greatest chance of the night, as ETSU dominated the shot count through the remainder of the game. The Buccaneers’ 21st and final shot came from Wilson, who netted the game’s only goal.
ETSU has a quick turnaround, as it heads back to Johnson City and prepares for No. 17 UAB on Sunday at 1 p.m., inside Summers-Taylor Stadium.
