Falcons hand Patriots their first loss, 2-1
FLORENCE, SC – Freshman forward Jeffrey Hessenberger scored on a rebound goal in the 66th minute and the University of Montevallo turned away every Francis Marion University attempt to score the tying goal to claim a 2-1 Peach Belt Conference victory, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29) in men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion suffered its first defeat of the season and drops to 3-1-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the PBC. The Patriots will play host to nationally ranked UNC Pembroke on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
FMU held a 12-11 advantage in shots and earned seven corner kicks to the Falcons’ one before a sun-drenched crowd at Hartzler Field.
Freshman defender Johan Naglestad scored the lone Patriot goal at the 19:06 mark. The sequence began with a corner kick by sophomore Sven Ricke. The ball ended up at the feet of senior Cody Farrier who deflected the ball to Naglestad who planted it into the back of the netting.
Montevallo scored first on 12-yard shot from the left side by Alex Morton at the 18:03 mark. Only 1:03 later, Naglestad answered with the tying tally.
FMU had an opportunity to take the lead in the 57th minute when a Ricke cross found junior Benjamin Kwast in the right side of the box, but Kwast’s attempt from 10 yards out was pushed over the end line by a diving Brendan Ledgeway, the Montevallo goalkeeper.
Hessenberger’s match-winner came following a wild scramble in the Patriots’ 6-yard box. Following a foul on FMU, the free kick came into the penalty area where the Falcons got off three shots in a span of three seconds. The final of the trio, by Hessenberger, was successful. Senior defender Ricky Davey, who had the second shot, was credited with an assist.
Francis Marion freshman goalkeeper Nick Stover suffered his first collegiate loss. He recorded four saves, while Ledgeway made six stops.
Freshman Shahin Hemat led the Patriots with three shots, two of which were on frame.
