Falcons stampede Mustangs
October 15, 2011
DETROIT, Mich. -- Last year''s NAIA National Runner-up Notre Dame men''s soccer team officially looked like that historic team picking up their 13th victory of the year Saturday afternoon, defeating the Mustangs of Marygrove College (Mich.) 7-0. (Box)
Freshman Stefan Bogdanovic scored a pair of goals as Notre Dame extended their regular season undefeated streak to 31 games. NDC is now 31-0-0 during its historic run which dates back to the end of the 2009 season.
The Falcons were lethal in the final third, scoring five times with their first 12 shots. As a team, NDC recorded 28 shots – including 12 on goal – to just 11 from Marygrove, which was unable to muster any real threat. For the contest, MC recorded just six shots on frame that were all easily collected by Notre Dame keeper Alex Klein.
Junior utility man Erik Beattie who scored three goals a year ago, wasted little time picking up his team leading fifth game winner in the fifth minute. After receiving a pass from sophomore Carlo Manna, Beattie redirected the ball and buried a shot into the corner of the net.
An individual effort gave the Falcons their second goal of the day, which came just 11 minutes later when freshman Martin Lange bagged his team leading 11th goal of the season.
Pressure applied by Manna led directly to the Falcons'' third goal in the 18th minute. After slipping through the Mustangs back line, the Australian slipped a ball to Tom Owens. The Liverpool, England, native added his seventh goal of the season, building Notre Dame''s lead to three.
Unsatisfied, Christian Earnest made it 4-0 in Notre Dame''s favor with his ninth goal of the season in the 30th minute -- assisted by Owens.
Sam Vail provided the concluding goal to the opening half -- his first of the season -- assisted by Dean Miller.
Cacak, Serbia, native Stefan Bogdanovic provided the game''s final two goals with well-executed goals late in the second half -- his first in a Notre Dame shirt.
The Falcons will next return to Korb Field for the Moonlight Madness contest. NDC will play Rochester (Mich.) on Saturday, Oct. 22 with NDC Student Activities providing free t-shirts, hot chocolate, and face painting and banner making stations.
