FDU Battles SFPA to Scoreless Tie
TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer team picked up one point after battling Saint Francis PA to a scoreless draw Friday night at University Stadium. With the tie, the Knights are now 7-4-3 (4-0-2 NEC) on the season, while the Red Flash is 5-6-3 (3-2-1 NEC) overall.
FDU had a couple of chances to get on the scoreboard near the end of the first half. Senior Antony Moore had a pair of shots that sailed over the goal with the second one just barely over the crossbar.
The Knights outshot Saint Francis PA 9-4 over the first 45 minutes and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The second half was much like the first where defense shined on both sides. Neither team was unable to muster a solid scoring chance. Heading into overtime, FDU had a 15-6 edge in shots after outshooting the Red Flash 6-2 over the second 45 minutes.
In the first overtime, Saint Francis PA had a chance to end the match, but junior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek came up with a huge save off a shot by Kavlick Sfum. Lissek dove to his right to prevent the shot from going in and quickly rose to his feet to corral the ball after he deflected it.
The Red Flash was able to get one shot off in the second overtime for the only shot during the final 10 minutes. In the two overtime periods, Saint Francis held a 3-2 edge in shots.
For the match, the Knights outshot the Red Flash 17-9 and 7-5 in corner kicks. Junior Nicholas Walker and sophomore Nico Wright had the only shots on goal for FDU.
Lissek picked up his third consecutive shutout and now has six on the season. The save in the first overtime was his only one of the match. Daniel Valcicak made two saves for Saint Francis PA.
“It was a good hard-fought battle,” Head Coach Seth Roland said. “It was a typical NEC match. Saint Francis is a very well-coached and competitive team who defends very well and is difficult to breakdown. On the positive side, we kept a clean sheet for the third straight match, and that is not a terrible thing. Now we will get ready for Robert Morris on Sunday and hopefully pick up three points against them.”
The Knights will return to action on Sunday with a home match against Robert Morris, who lost 2-1 tonight at Monmouth. Kickoff at University Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
