FDU Rallies for 3-2 Double OT Win at Siena
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- For the second game in a row, junior Anders Vest-Hansen's penalty kick in overtime was the difference in the Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team's come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Siena Saturday at the Siena Turf Field. With the victory, the Knights improve to 7-3-0 on the season, while the Saints fall to 4-4-0 overall.
With 1:34 left in double overtime, a foul was called on Siena in the box, and Vest-Hansen drilled his second consecutive walk-off penalty kick in as many matches.
But FDU needed to rally from a 2-0 halftime deficit to pick up its only second true road victory of the season. The Saints did all their damage over the final five minutes of the opening stanza. Tom Allen scored the first goal at the end of the 41st minute on a tap-in after a cross, while Mike Matera scored with 53 seconds left before halftime after he was able to dribble in for the score after a turnover on a goal kick.
In the second half the Knights stepped up their offensive attack and cut the lead to 2-1 on sophomore Simon Doherty's second goal of the season on a deflection in the last second of the 65th minute.
Nine minutes later, the contest was knotted at 2-2 on an own goal by Siena.
The second half saw FDU hold a commanding 14-4 advantage in shots and entered overtime with a 23-11 lead.
The Knights had one shot opportunity in the first overtime, and each side had one in the second 10-minute extra period before Vest Hansen's game winner for his second goal of the season.
For the contest, FDU outshot the Saints, 26-12, and in corner kicks, 8-5. Senior goalkeeper Jacob Lissek made four saves between the pipes en route to picking up his second victory.
Both sides came into the contest ranked in the top-10 of the NSCAA North Atlantic Regional Rankings, with the Knights checking in at No. 5 and the Saints at No. 7
FDU will return to action Friday, Oct. 11 when it opens Northeast Conference play on the road at Saint Francis University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Loretto, Pa.
