Fernandes goal lifts Stony Brook past Hart.
West Hartford, Conn. - Senior Leonardo Fernandes (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute to lead the Stony Brook men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Hartford Saturday night at Al-Marzook Field. Senior Raphael Abreu (New York, N.Y.) also scored for the Seawolves, who moved to 9-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in America East.
Coach Ryan Anatol's Reaction
"I thought it was a good win on the road, and a good performance by our guys. I thought we responded well to giving up the goal in the second half and did well to score again and get the result we were looking for."
Goal Recaps
- In the 25th minute, Abreu received a ball played into him, moved towards Hawks goalkeeper Viltsu Tuumi and took a point blank shot at him that Tuumi saved but couldn't control. The ball popped out to a Hartford defender, but Abreu anticipated the play and stole it from him and then swatted the ball into the goal, far side.
- In the 63rd minute, Hartford's Anthony Santaga converted a cross from Rohan Roye by heading it in well over senior goalkeeper Stefan Manz (Bronx, N.Y.).
- In the 73rd minute, senior Kyle Schlesinger (Selden, N.Y.) broke up a Hartford attack and played the ball into the midfield. Fernandes then got a hold of the ball on a pass from senior Berian Gobeil Cruz (Montreal, Quebec), took on a pair of defenders, pushed the ball to his left foot and blasted a shot into the net high over Tuumi's head from about 25 yards out.
The Numbers Game
