FLYERS BATTLE RICE TO 2-2 DRAW
HOUSTON – The University of Dayton women’s soccer team fought to a 2-2 draw against Rice in 110 minutes of action in 93-degree heat at Holloway Field.
Dayton (0-1-1) and Rice (0-1-1) each notched 11 shots in the match. The Owls struck first in the 10th minute after Danielle Spriggs cleaned up a rebounded shot.
The Flyers scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead at the half. Freshman Alexis Kiehl scored her first collegiate goal in the 22nd minute to even the match. Junior Nicole Waters put away a penalty kick in the 31st minute. It marked her third goal of the season.
The Owls scored the equalizer in the 57th minute on another rebound shot.
UD came into the match after a 4-3 loss to No.9 Texas A&M, while Rice was coming off a 1-0 overtime loss to Baylor.
Sophomore Elizabeth James had eight saves in goal for the Flyers.
Dayton plays its home opener this Friday, Aug. 29 at Baujan Field vs. UC Santa Barbara at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. It is a Red Out and fans are encouraged to wear red. Also there is a free 2014 Dayton women’s soccer schedule poster to the first 150 fans. It is also Youth Soccer Weekend and kids who wear a jersey will get a free popcorn.
