FMU Men beat Trojans 4-2 with first-half
MT. OLIVE, NC – Francis Marion University scored four goals in the opening 35 minutes and went on to claim a 4-2 win over the University of Mount Olive, Wednesday night (Sept. 20) in non-conference men’s soccer action.
FMU improves to 4-1-0 and will next face the University of North Georgia on the road on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Patriots’ Peach Belt Conference opener. The next home match for the Patriots will be Sept. 30 against Clayton State University with the kick-off set for 5:30 p.m.
The Patriots now claim an all-time record of 17-3-0 against UMO. Francis Marion entered the contest ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Southeast Region poll, while Mount Olive (3-2-0) was ranked 10th.
The scoring started for Francis Marion in the fifth minute of play as junior forward Levin Sandmann beat the Trojans’ freshman goalkeeper Preston Snyder in a one-on one situation. Sandmann doubled the margin with an unassisted goal at the 22:14 mark. The reigning PBC Player of the Year now has a team-high six goals in 2017.
The scoring kept coming for FMU as senior defender Jevon Williams gathered the ball off a rebound inside the box and put it into the back of the net, notching his first goal of the season, to make the score 3-0 in the 27th minute.
Senior Gaspard Mianne fed sophomore midfielder Jordan Dechere the ball for the Patriots’ final goal at the 34:54 mark.
The Trojans scored twice in the final 23 minutes when junior Sebastian Loibl hit the back of the net off a 30-yard free kick in the 68th minute and Loibl used an assist by Grant Conybear at the 80:18 mark to account for the final tally.
FMU freshman goalkeeper Raul Guillamon Bejar accounted for six saves, while Snyder had four.
Mount Olive outshot the Patriots 23-16 and led 5-4 in corner kicks.
