Former college players at the Olympics
This week marks the start of both the Olympics and – two days before the Opening Ceremonies – the men’s and women’s soccer tournaments that are part of the competition.
As covered earlier this year, the U.S. men’s national team didn’t make it, while as usual, the U.S. women are one of, if not the favorite to bring the Gold Medal back from Japan.
In past Olympics, current college players have competed in the Games. This year is no different, as a five women’s DI players are rostered for the tournament. Julia Grosso (Texas), Gabrielle Carle (Florida State) and Jayde Riviere (Michigan) will play for Canada, while Daisy Cleverley is set to play for New Zealand before playing for Georgetown again in the fall. Gabi Rennie (Indiana) also made the New Zealand roster.
There is obviously a much longer list of former college players from men’s and women’s DI programs that are set to compete in Japan. Check out the list below (current players are noted with an asterisk).
