Former Lobo Blake Smith Nets MLS Game Winner
MONTREAL, Quebec -- Former Lobo Soccer standout Blake Smith found the back of the net again for the Montreal Impact of the MLS. After picking up his first career goal earlier this season, Smith netted the game-winning goal for the Montreal Impact over Sporting Kansas City during stoppage time on Saturday night.
“It’s hard to remember (the exact replay of the goal). It came across from the right side, and Patrice (Bernier) did a nice little dummy. Marco (Di Vaio) had just one touch and got his head up to be able to slip me in for a finish. It’s a great feeling,” Smith recalled to the media after the match.
The Texan is starting to develop a knack for scoring in stoppage time. His first career goal, in May versus the Philadelphia Union, was also scored in extra time.
Saturday’s goal was crucial for the Impact who are one of three teams with ten wins atop the Eastern Conference standings. It’s team-first mindset that Smith referred to when discussing his goal.
“The win was huge for us today; that’s all that really needs to be said. We had it in our minds we wanted to get the full three points today, and we fought for the entire 90 minutes and then some. We were fortunate enough to get the three points.”
Smith and former teammate Devon Sandoval (Real Salt Lake) are both having superb rookie seasons in the MLS. Both clubs are among the top in their division as the MLS season is now past its midpoint.
