Former USYNT players called in by Mexico NT
Diego Lopez (Philadelphia Union), Adrian Anguiano (FC Dallas), and Carlos Diaz (LAFC) are among the players from the 2005 age group called up to the Mexico U16 National Team camp currently being held in Mexico City.
Lopez, previously a player for San Diego Surf, played for the U.S. U15 Boys National Team in March 2020, the last camp for that age group. This call-up to Mexico is his first appearance with the Mexico Youth National Team.
Anguiano is a defender from Forney, Texas. He was part of the U.S. U14 BNT central regional camp in March of 2019. The center back made some appearances with the FC Dallas U17 team last year.
Diaz is following in the footsteps of fellow LAFC Academy players with his appearance with the Mexico Youth Team. Last month, three players from LAFC were called up to the Mexico U17 Men’s National Team (Erik Duenas, Christian Torres, and Tony Leone). Diaz is a midfielder from Baldwin Park, California.
San Jose Earthquakes Academy player and Allstate Sueño Alianza alum Daniel Fregoso was called up to the Mexico U15 National Team, which is also training this week. Fregoso, from Los Baños, California, previously played for Ajax Modesto. He joined the Quakes for the 2020/2021 season. He has been previously called up to the U.S. U14 Boys National Team.
UCLA center back Karina Rodriguez was called up to the Mexico Women’s National Team last month. She made her debut with the first team last week in the game against Costa Rica. She started in the scoreless draw on Feb. 23. Rodriguez was part of the U.S. U17 Women’s World Cup squad in 2016. She most recently played for USA in 2018 at the U20 level.
