Francis Marion trips up UNCP 3-1
FLORENCE, SC – Senior Cody Farrier and sophomore Sven Ricke each tallied second-half goals to lift Francis Marion University to a 3-1 win over visiting UNC Pembroke, Wednesday night (Oct. 2) in Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer action.
Francis Marion rebounded from its first loss of the season on Sunday to improve to 4-1-2 overall and 2-1-0 in the PBC. The Patriots will play host to the University of North Georgia on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. on Youth Soccer Night.
Freshman Shahin Hemat gave Francis Marion an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute with a laser-beam 23-yard shot from straight on. Ricke brought the ball up the right side and crossed it to Farrier, who deftly back-heeled the sphere to Hemat for his second long-distance goal of the season and third overall.
UNCP (5-3-0, 2-2-0) knotted the score at the 18:52 mark when junior Sam Miles took a pass from Faustin Pierre and blasted an 8-yard shot from a tough right angle just outside the 6-yard box.
Ricke nearly put the Patriots back on top at 22:21, but his free kick from 30 yards out was pushed aside by UNCP senior keeper Ryan Hanson. Hanson finished the match with nine saves.
Ricke’s eventual go-ahead score in the 66th minute was the third scoring opportunity in a four-minute span, all of which involved the German midfielder. The sequence began with sophomore Lukas Pousset driving in from the left side and finding senior Alex Blandin atop the 18-yard box. Blandin then slotted the ball off to his right where Ricke converted an 11-yard shot.
The margin was upped to 3-1 at the 70:31 mark when Hemat fed the ball by a UNCP defender and Farrier put a 10-yard shot into the goal netting.
Miles looked to score his second goal of the match in the 73rd minute, but his looping shot hit the crossbar and bounced straight down and then into the hands of FMU freshman goalkeeper Nick Stover. Stover recorded three saves on the evening.
UNCP had one more serious scoring opportunity in the 82nd minute, but Stover turned aside a well-struck 6-yard shot by Kevin Vigebo.
FMU outshot the Braves 17-7 and held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
