ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore forward Alex Adelabu's (Houston, Texas) golden goal in the 106th minute gave the Dartmouth men's soccer team a 1-0 double overtime win over Missouri State in the final game of the TL Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 16).
In the first overtime session, both teams got off just one shot, with Dartmouth's Sten Stray-Gundersen (Frisco, Texas) recording the lone shot on goal in the first extra period, paving the way for Adelabu's game winner.
Adelabu, who scored each of Dartmouth's three goals on the weekend, drilled a shot in the box to end the game. The forward connected with a pass from Colin Heffron (Upper Brookville, N.Y.) from six yards out sending the Big Green home with three points. The win snapped Missouri State's seven-game undefeated streak.
Opening the second half, deadlocked at 0-0, the Dartmouth (3-3-0) offense continued to keep shooting, after taking six first-half shots. Colin Skelly (Wrightstown, Pa.) almost broke through with a driven shot from the top of the box, but Missouri State goalkeeper, Andrew Riggs, made the save.
The complexion of the game changed in the 80th minute as the Bears had a player sent off with a red card, but Dartmouth couldn't capitalize on the extra man advantage, sending the Big Green to its second overtime contest of the season.
Skelly led the offense with three shots while Sean Donovan (Burr Ridge, Ill.) earned his first win of the season, making no saves in 106 minutes of action.
With both teams coming of an intense Friday night matchups both teams looked to set the tone early in the contest and it seemed as if Dartmouth had the better offensive chances early.
Senior Brad Jacobson (Larchmont, N.Y.) looked to put the Big Green ahead in the 11th minute. The forward found himself at the top of the box and winded up for a shot but it was blocked by the Bear defense.
Dartmouth's offense seemed to warm up midway through the half with consecutive shots from Patrick Murray (Lakewood, Ohio) and Andoni Georgiou (London, England) but neither found the net.
Credit the Big Green defense for keeping the Missouri State offense out of synch, as the Bears only recorded one shot in the first half, while Dartmouth teed the ball up six times.
Skelly had the final shot of the half, sending the ball wide right of the net just before halftime.
Dartmouth will stay on the road, traveling to Amherst, Mass., to take on UMass on Saturday (Sept. 22). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
