Hartford earns 0-0 draw against Binghamton
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford men's soccer team finished with a 20-8 advantage in shots but were unable to break through, earning a 0-0 tie with the visiting Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday night at Alumni Stadium. Both teams earn one point in the conference standings as the Hawks stand at 1-2-1 in conference play (8-3-3 overall).
Hawks keeper David MacKinnon was forced into action on three of the Bearcats' eight total shots as he completed his sixth shutout of the season. With the scoreless draw, Hartford remains unblemished in games requiring extra time with a mark of 3-0-3.
Hartford put the first opportunity on goal nearly nine minutes into the game on a scrum in front of the net that resulted in a header from Jhamie Hyde. Binghamton's keeper Stefan Frantellizi cradled the ball mid chest for his first save of the night.
The Hawks threatened less than two minutes later on a full field breakaway that narrowly missed scoring the night's first goal. As the Hawks rushed down field, Frantellizi came out of the six-yard box to play the ball but the clear ricocheted off a Hartford striker. That rebound which came off the boot of Aleko Petridis skipped off the post, resulting in the Hawks' first corner kick opportunity of the evening.
Hartford kept its pressure on the Bearcats' defense, forcing Frantelizzi to make his second save in the 31st minute with Javoni Simms registerting the shot registered by. With less than eight minutes remaining the Hawks nearly broke through on their fifth corner kick of the half. The Hawks followed up the restart from Rohan Roye with a trio of corner kicks, the final of which narrowly missed the far upright.
Binghamton had the first opportunity of the second half working off a corner kick six minutes into the action. The service by Ben Nicholson found the head of Luca Bottoni whose shot was blocked off the goal line by Anthony Santaga for a team save.
After a pair of breakaway opportunities for the Hawks resulted in off the mark shots for Hartford, the home team rebounded for a pair of scoring chances in the final 2:30. The first of those came on another breakaway chance with the shot from Udi Cohen. Making his debut in a Hawk uniform, the freshmans attempt was tipped just over the net by Frantelizzi. The second chance came with 83 seconds remaining as Simms' fifth shot of the night ricocheted off the crossbar.
In the first extra period, Hartford would be awarded its 10th corner kick in the opening minute with the first shot of the overtime coming off the head of Santaga and pushed just over the crossbar ending the opportunity. Two more opportunities were produced by Hartford late in the first overtime with a shot from Romario Jonesgoing high and one from Jeff Tryon getting blocked by a Bearcat defender.
The Hawks threatened again early in the second overtime on a through pass from Petridis just 80 seconds into the extra frame. That pass found Santaga who pushed his shot wide of the goal.
Hartford takes to the road for its next three games, a stretch that includes trips to Northeastern (Oct. 22), Stony Brook (Oct. 27) and Albany (Nov. 2).
