Hartwick Drops 4-0 Decision at Georgia State
ATLANTA, GA – Hartwick surrendered a pair of goals inside the first 10 minutes and never recovered in a 4-0 Sun Belt Conference loss to Georgia State on Saturday in Atlanta. The game was a rematch of last season’s Sun Belt Tournament final won by the Hawks, 3-0.
Hartwick falls to 7-5-3 overall on the season with the result. Georgia State improves to 11-6.
The Hawks slip into a tie for fourth place in the league standings with one game to play against Howard. They have dropped four straight for the first time since 2012 and are winless in their last five matches.
The Panthers opened the scoring just 3:34 into the match as Kyle Clinton headed in a Casey Shultis free kick for a 1-nil lead. Six minutes, five seconds later, the advantage was doubled as Shultis scored on a counter for Georgia State for a two-goal advantage for the hosts.
In the 30th minute, Hannes Burmeister added the hosts’ lead as he registered his 10th goal of the season and the Hawks entered halftime down three goals. The Panthers would out-shoot the Hawks by a 13-3 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
It didn’t get much better for Hartwick early in the second half as Burmeister added his second tally of the game just 14 seconds into the stanza. A Liam Fitzsimmons’ free kick caught a deflection and Burmeister was there to find the back of the net for an insurmountable 4-0 lead. The Panthers would hold a 7-4 edge in shots in the second half to finish with a 20-7 advantage.
Kane O’Neill (Lochwinnoch, Scotland/Gryffe HS) recorded two of the Hawks’ three shots on goal. Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) produced three shots.
Hartwick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) recorded seven saves on the night. Georgia State’s Yannic Horn and Hassan El-Haddad combined for three stops for the Panthers.
The Hawks host LaSalle on Tuesday night in their final non-league game of the season before hosting Howard on Saturday in their regular season finale.
