September 17, 2016

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Hartwick out-shot the host Peacocks by a wide 20-8 margin, including a 9-3 advantage in the second half, but the Hawks could only come away with a 1-1 tie on Saturday in Jersey City, NY. The result is ’Wick’s second straight draw. The Hawks are now 2-1-2 overall. St. Peter’s is now 1-3-2 on the year.
The Peacocks would get the first chance on goal and they made it count in the 6th minute. A Hartwick foul in the box gave the hosts a penalty kick which was converted by Luke Fairlamb for his third tally of the season and St. Peter’s had the early edge.
Hartwick would double up St. Peter’s in the shots in the opening 45 minutes but had nothing to show for it. Finally, 7:43 into the second half, Johnny McBeth (Glasgow, Scotland/Upper Iowa University) evened the match with an unassisted tally. He beat Peacock keeper Jamie Cleland for his second goal of the season.
Hartwick had six more shots to SPU’s three for the remainder of the half but the game remained deadlocked. In the first overtime, McBeth had the Hawks’ lone shot on goal which was saved by Cleland.
In the second extra session, Kyle Honor (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) had a pair of shots on target and Jonny Carr (Sunderland, England/Monkwearmouth School) added another but Cleland was up to the task as he finished the game with 10 saves.
Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) led Hartwick with five shots on the afternoon. There were them were on frame. Hamish Ritchie (Aboyne, Scotland/Aboyne Academy) took four shots for the Hawks and McBeth and Honor each had three.
Matt Morrish (Brighton, England/St. Bede’s School) played all 110 minutes in goal. He needed to make just one save.
Hartwick men’s soccer plays on Wednesday, September 21 at Siena College in its next contest. The Hawks and Saints kickoff at 3 p.m. in Loudonville.
