Harvard women defeat Penn
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Christina Hagner, Melanie Baskind and Lizzy Nichols each scored a goal to help the Harvard women’s soccer team defeat Penn, 3-2, for its first Ivy League victory of the season Saturday afternoon at Ohiri Field.
After the Quakers netted the game’s first goal on a shot by Jessica Fuccello at 11:56, the Crimson responded with two scores to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Hagner finished off a cross pass by Alexandra Conigliaro to tie the contest at 24:45, as she bounced a shot into an open net. Later in the first, Katherine Sheeleigh booted a shot on goal, and Baskind fired the rebound into the back of the cage at 41:01.
In the second half, Sheeleigh was pulled down in the box, setting up a penalty kick for the Crimson. Nichols capitalized on the chance, giving Harvard a two-goal cushion at 51:33. Penn cut its deficit in half, 3-2, on a tally by Theresa Yankovich in the 70th minute, but the Quakers would not get closer, as the Crimson defense prevented any other scoring opportunities.
Mann earned her second win in net for the Crimson, making one save, while Harvard outshot Penn, 18-13.
The Crimson also earned five corner kicks, while the Quakers had two. The Crimson will look for its second straight win as the team hosts Holy Cross at Cumnock Turf Tuesday at 7 p.m.
