THE LEAD: The University of Hartford men's soccer team went neck-and-neck with Old Dominion, the 22nd-ranked team in the nation, but fell to the Monarchs in overtime by a 3-2 decision in the final match of the STIHL Classic on Sunday. Junior Jeff Tryon and senior Javoni Simms each netted goals for the Hawks, who suffered their first overtime loss since the start of the 2013 season, a 16 game stretch. Odu Militar netted the golden-goal for the Monarchs, reaching the right corner of the net on a free kick from 35-yards out in the 105th minute of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Hartford reached the scoreboard first, and broke open the match in the 28th minute thanks to juniorJeff Tryon's first goal of the season. The striker corralled a deflection inside of the box, and finished from inside of the six-yard box.
- That halftime score held until 13 minutes into the second, when a Hartford foul inside of the scoring box led to the equalizer. In the 59th minute, Ryan Condotta translated that whistle into ODU's first goal on a penalty kick, making it a 1-1 contest.
- The Monarchs went on to take their first lead of the contest less than four minutes later, as Michael Nelson put the home team in front by a 2-1 count at the 62:42 mark. Out of a corner kick taken by Ivan Militar, Nelson got his head under the ball and sent a high shot into the net. Junior goalkeeper David MacKinnon got his fingertips on the shot, but it wasn't enough to turn away the go-ahead marker.
- Senior Javoni Simms didn't waste much time to knot up the game for the second time, and eventually force overtime. Tryon and senior Blake Jones were credited with assists on the play, as a cross was flicked into the box towards Simms, who finished off the right corner of the net to make it a 2-2 match in the 66th minute.
- Down the final stretch of regulation, ODU held a 7-3 edge in shots, but neither team would capitalize on any of its scoring opportunities.
- Ivan Militar saw the best look at the net in the first overtime period. His shot in the 93rd minute was saved by MacKinnon.
- In the game's second overtime, it was Militar who capitalized on his team's second shot of the period. On a long free kick from 35-yards out, Militar's long blast skipped into the right corner of the net to clinch the game for the Monarchs. Hartford had one good look prior to the game-winning tally, but Tryon's shot would be stopped by ODU keeper Alex Tiesenhausen.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Hartford's eight shots were bettered by ODU, as the Monarchs finished with 18 attempts
- The Monarchs also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks and put two more shots on goal than the Hawks (6-4)
- Junior David MacKinnon combined to make three saves on the night; his counterpart, Alex Tiesenhausen, finished the match with a pair of stops
