Hawks Defeated by #19 American, 3-1
WASHINGTON, DC – Two goals early in the second half broke open a one-goal game Friday as nationally nineteenth ranked American University beat Hartwick’s men’s soccer team 3-1 at the Capital Cup in Washington. Goals from Dale Ludwig and Stephen Hauschild one minute apart would give the Eagles a three-goal cushion.
Reigning Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week Kit Tregear (Brighton, England/BHASVIC) scored off a cross from David Styles (Bognor Regis, England/St. Phillip Howard) 8:38 into the second half but that was all the scoring the Hawks would get.
“We played well at times and at other key moments we needed to be much better,” said Hartwick coach John Scott. “We pulled the goal back and didn’t give up but the hole was dug and was too deep to claw out of.”J
oe Iraola would give the Eagles the lead at the 21:09 mark of the first half. He beat Tom Buckner (Oxford, England/Henley College) from 15 yards out following a turnover in the Hartwick end.
The first half would end with American holding a slim 7-6 edge in shots.
Four minutes, nineteen seconds into the second half, Ludwig scored following a free kick and the Eagles got the insurance marker. Christian Robbs and Liam Robley were credited with the assists.
Sixty seconds later, Conor Osbourne’s cross found Hauschild in front for the Eagles’ third tally.
The Hawks responded less than five minutes later on Tregear’s header from in close but the score line remained the same for the final 36 minutes.
American finished the match out-shooting the Hawks 19-10. The Eagles held a 12-4 edge in the second half. Buckner ended the match in goal with seven saves. Dylan Hobert made three stops for American.
“When you’re playing a team which is full of confidence after beating UCLA, you can’t afford to lay the way we did,” added Scott. The Eagles beat the top-ranked Bruins last week.
The Capital Cup continues on Sunday when the Hawks play #22 George Mason. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
