Hawks Fall on Elmore to Marist by 2-1 Final
ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick senior Jamie O’Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk HS) gave Hartwick men’s soccer a quick 1-0 lead less than 20 seconds into the match only to have two second-half goals push Marist College past the Hawks on Tuesday night on Elmore Field. The loss drops the Hawks to 0-2 on the season with the Red Foxes upping their season tally to 2-0.
O’Grady got into the box with the ball and was fouled with only 17 seconds elapsed to give his squad a big opportunity at the early lead. He did just that, sending Red Fox goalkeeper Mark Rajovic the wrong way on the ensuing penalty kick and finishing low into the bottom corner for the 1-0 advantage.
In the 19th minute, Marist had a chance to even the score after winning a penalty of its own following a Hartwick foul. Juan Parada took the kick but Hartwick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy) made a diving stop to his left to keep it out and he corralled any chance at a rebound to keep the game level.
In the 41st minute, the Hawks had a great opportunity to increase their lead following good work from forwards Marco Torino (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford HS) and O’Grady. Torino started the play by delivering a short pass to O’Grady who fed the ball back across the box for his teammate with a clear look at goal. Torino, however, would put his shot up over the crossbar.
Wilson would preserve the Hartwick lead with two and a half minutes remaining after he robbed a header from Marist’s David Nkansah-Siriboe.
The Hawks would surrender a goal in the opening 90 seconds of the second half for the second consecutive match. Simon Lund Jorgensen got the equalizer after he gathered a deflection at the top of the box, made a move to get free of a ’Wick defender, and looped a high shot over the head of Wilson that deflected in off the post for a 1-1 game.
It took just over 20 minutes for the Red Foxes to get the clincher. Allen Gavilanes got the end line and sent his diving cross in front to Bruce Jeter who sent the ball in from eight yards away.
The Hawks had an opportunity with just over 12 minutes remaining after Hamish Ritchie (Aberdeen, Scotland/Aboyne Academy) got the ball to Torino, who sent a screamer inches wide. The ball took a deflection for a corner but the Hawks weren’t able to produce another chance. Torino had the final chance for Hartwick following a pass from Casey Feehan (McDonough, NY/Cincinnatus Central) but his effort was turned away by Rajovic.
Wilson would finish the night with eight saves for the Hawks. Rajovic made three saves for Marist. The Red Foxes held a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 10-4 edge in corners.
Hartwick returns to action on Friday night on Elmore. The Hawks will play host to St. Peter’s University beginning at 7 p.m.
