Hawks score ninth shutout at Stony Brook
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – A late first half goal off the boot of junior forward Omar Tall was all University of Hartford men's soccer team needed to take down Stony Brook, 1-0, at LaValle Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Scoring for the first time in his career, Tall's tally helped the Hawks improve to 10-3-3 overall and 2-2-1 in America East games.
The win, Head Coach Tom Poitras' 25th since arriving at Hartford for the 2011 season, helped the Hawks vault into a three-way tie for third in the league standings with Vermont and Albany. Hartford, which defeated Catamounts earlier this month, takes on the Great Danes next Saturday evening in New York's capital city. Stony Brook (6-8-1) drops to seventh place in the standings with a 1-3-1 mark.
The only goal of the match came in the final minute of the first half. On a restart from the far sideline, the Hawks sent a cross into the box. Following a series of deflections, reshirt freshman Shane Dineen, who was face-to-face with Seawolves' keeper Carlos Villa, pushed a pass to his right to Tall. With the goaltender out of place, Tall finished the play with 30 seconds left until halftime, rewarding Dineen with his first career points.
Tall came off the bench earlier in the half while Dineen had been inserted into the lineup just four minutes before the tally. With the helper, six different Hawks have scored the first points of their careers this season.
Hartford keeper David MacKinnon, a rookie, did not face a single Stony Brook shot on goal to improve his record to 8-3-2. As a team, the Hawks have chalked up nine shutouts, seven of which belong to MacKinnon, to tie the 1984 squad for the Division I school record in clean sheets.
Extending its unbeaten streak to three matches, Hartford outshot Stony Brook, 9-3, and held the advantage in corner kicks at 4-3.
