Hawks take down College of Charleston, 1-0
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford men’s soccer team scored its third-straight shutout victory on Friday afternoon as sophomore forward Jeff Tryon’s second-half goal propelled the Hawks to a 1-0 result against the College of Charleston in the opening match of the Akron Tournament. Hartford concludes play in its lone tournament of the season on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when it takes on the host-team Zips at FirstEnergy Stadium – Club Cadet Stadium.
Sophomore David MacKinnon recorded three saves in the match, including two late in second half, to help the Hawks remain unbeaten in 2014 with a 3-0-1 overall record. That mark ties the second-best start through four matches in 30 years of Division I soccer at Hartford. The Cougars dip to 2-3-0 with the setback.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Hawks applied pressure on Charleston’s back line early, opening the first 30 minutes with three scoring opportunities
- In the 10th minute, sophomore midfielder Romario Jones served a shot from inside of the box, but Brian Kilgallon was in place to make his first of three saves on the afternoon
- Senior midfielder Rohan Roye saw his shot from the top of the box skim the crossbar in the 22nd minute before classmate Omar Tall, a forward, had his attempt from the close left wing saved by Kilgallon
- Sophomore goalkeeper David MacKinnon made back-to-back saves in the 60th minute and 63rd minute to keep the match tied at 0-0
- With his seventh career goal, sophomore forward Jeff Tryon broke open a 70-minute stalemate with the eventual game-winning tally out of a scrum inside of the 18-yard box
